Kishore Kumar, born Abhas Kumar Ganguly in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, became one of the defining voices of Indian film music. He entered the Bombay film industry in the 1940s, initially pursuing acting while gradually establishing himself as a singer. His early recordings reflected his admiration for K. L. Saigal, but he eventually developed a highly individual approach that combined expressive phrasing, playful yodelling and an unusual ability to shift between romance, comedy and melancholy.
His breakthrough came with "Aradhana" in 1969. Songs including “Mere Sapnon Ki Rani” and “Roop Tera Mastana” transformed his standing in Hindi cinema and helped make him the principal playback voice for Rajesh Khanna. His subsequent work with composers such as S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman and Bappi Lahiri produced a vast catalogue that carried him through the 1970s and 1980s.
Kishore was not limited to playback singing. He acted in films, composed music, wrote songs and screenplays, and directed and produced projects including "Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein" and "Door Ka Rahi." He also recorded in Bengali and several other Indian languages, demonstrating a reach that extended beyond mainstream Hindi cinema.
His career earned eight Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer, including his first for “Roop Tera Mastana” from "Aradhana," alongside several Bengal Film Journalists' Association honours. His influence continued after his death from a heart attack in Bombay on 13 October 1987, aged 58. More than a performer, Kishore Kumar left behind an artistic identity built on individuality, versatility and a refusal to sound like anyone else.
